This Mango Turmeric Lassi is loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components. This recipe is dairy-free, paleo, and AIP-friendly.
This Mango Turmeric Lassi is one of my favorite beverages. Not only it is very delicious, but it is literally loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components because of the almighty turmeric!
Lassi is a popular yogurt-based drink that originated in India. It is a blend of yogurt and/or milk with spices and fruits, although fruits are not always utilized. In fact, traditional lassi is a savory drink made with yogurt and flavored with cumin. I was first introduced to the lassi drink, which, of course, included mango lassi, during my stay in Dubai. By that time, mango smoothies were already on the list of my favorite drinks, but it was cool to find out that yogurt could be a delicious alternative that also brings in additional benefits in the form of live bacteria (though I didn’t care for the latter at the time!).
Dubai opened a whole new world for me, and this is where I tried most of the exotic fruits for the first time. I was in my mid-twenties at that time, ready to conquer the world and open to discoveries, including gastronomic ones! On top of that, it was my first extended experience away from home and on my own.
Mango Turmeric Lassi as a digestive aid
Nowadays, many years down the road, I still cherish memories of my sojourn in Dubai, where my love for spicy foods has gotten ingrained. I am lucky that my husband shares most of my culinary preferences, and he also enjoys spicy foods. I avoid nightshades as they can be pretty aggressive to the stomach lining. But whenever I cook relatively spicy dishes, like this one, I like to accompany them with a shot of mango turmeric lassi as a digestive aid.
- 1-1½ teaspoons turmeric powder (add more for sprinkling)
- 1 cup coconut yogurt (or milk)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 large ripe mango,* roughly chopped
- 2 frozen bananas, roughly chopped
- Honey or maple syrup to taste**
- Stir in the turmeric powder into the coconut yogurt and transfer the mixture to the blender.
- Add the lemon juice, mango and banana chunks and blend everything until smooth and creamy.
- Enjoy right away!
Freeze the lassi in ice cream pop molds to enjoy later!
*You can also use 2 small mangoes instead.
**Honey or maple syrup are not necessary if you use fully ripened fruits, though depending of your taste buds feel free to add 1 to 3 tablespoons.
